I keep thinking oh man, I’m so immature. How am I allowed to be an adult.

Then I spend time with teenagers.

And it’s like, wow, okay, yeah. I am an adult. I am so adult. Look at me adulting all over the place.

I need to remember this for uniforms.

Oh my god, I am learning this ASAP. HOW DID I NOT KNOW OF THIS BEFORE?!

A tutorial on depicting tears warns against using white, instead suggests a saturated light blue. Didn’t know humans cried Gatorade.

Tutorials are good for a lot of things, don’t get me wrong. They can help the artist understand their own style better as well as introduce others to a new perspective. But there’s a big difference between saying “this is my recommendation” and putting in big red text “DO NOT DO IT THIS WAY! do it this way instead!” Especially if the way you’re insisting on is kind of… wrong… you know? Maybe saturated light blue tears look good for your style, but that’s certainly not going to be universal. Liquid, especially in small amounts, is clear. Tears are defined on the face primarily by highlights and shadows. In a normal human being, color is not a part of the equation at all. If your style calls for blue tears, go for it, but don’t preach to others that blue is a better choice than white for depicting a liquid that’s defined almost entirely by its highlights.

Buh unintentional rant. Just… take tutorials with a grain of salt, if you don’t already. Each and every one of them comes down to an individual perspective that may differ from your own in a variety of ways.

I’m generally a fan of Shaft’s work but I kind of wish they’d tone down the edginess of their animation style, I’ve recently started to find it super distracting. With the most recent Madoka movie they seemed to value artsiness and symbolism over telling a cohesive story. And with the new and highly anticipated Mekakucity Actors, the whole thing’s so full of Shaft’s typical jarring cuts and sudden palette changes and shaky zooms and disconcerting angles that I spend more time thinking about the animation itself than about what the animation is trying to convey.

I dunno, I guess from a marketing standpoint, if your audience can look at your product and immediately know it’s you, that’s a big success. Shaft’s work is just so visually exhausting these days though. It’s like they’re barely even thinking about telling the story.

not all character development exists to make someone a better person

people turn into assholes, too. They become more  manipulative, arrogant, clingy, irritated… complex.

and that’s okay, that’s important.

explore that.

It doesn’t matter how well-written, developed, and deep a character is, there will always be a group of people in the fandom that will reduce that character to 2 or 3 traits and then misinterpret everything they do based on those 2 or 3 traits which may or may not even be accurate to that character.
